Steps towards life
A charitable urban project
Childhood stories do not belong in hospitals
Every year, in Romania, hundreds of children sick with cancer die, although, correctly medically treated they could live. Every day of their lives is marked by only doubts and fears if they are going to be cured or on the contrary if their story will end sooner then it should.
We are organizing a series of cultural urban events that take place in unconventional places, supported by a social network formed by students from faculties of arts, architecture, design, theatre, sociology, young directors, musicians, poets, photographers, mainly people without secrets or inhibitions in showing their beautiful talent, work and their existence on the streets of Bucharest. They go out on the streets for the ones that do not have the time to pass through art galleries but at the same time to show that you can raise funds in a creative way if the cause is worth it.
The endowment of the Department of Pediatrics Oncology from the Marie Curie Hospital is such a cause. This project is a platform for a partial support of the expenses necessary in buying the equipment for investigation and treatment of cancer. We are offering a harmonious braiding in which the humanitarian character of art makes it even more dignified.
Why did we start this project?
Almost 500 children get sick with cancer every year in Romania, but only half of them survive. Studies have shown, that if they would be correctly medically treated, carefully supervised and the hospitals would be equipped appropriately, there would be over 90% chances that these children would proper heal.
The little ones show much courage in their fight with this disease. Right by their sides, doctors and their families are trying to ensure the necessary conditions for the treatment. The “Marie Curie’ Hospital has a department dedicated to the children that are sick with cancer: the Department of Pediatrics Oncology.
Among the indispensible things for the cure of these children are two sterile beds and a sterile isolation room in which the children treated with large doses of cytostatics could spend a few days without risking a possible infection or complications.
Through artistic activities, which would bring together public persons, artists but also the large audience, we want to improve the chances of life that these children have. We plan to raise at least 20000 of Euros, which will be a donation from the foundation ‘Touched Romania’ to the ‘Marie Curie’ Hospital.
Most children sleep soundly after they listen to a story, have beautiful dreams and wake up the other day and go out and play. They live.
The other sad part of reality is that some children never get out of hospitals and do not know what a true childhood is.
When all your life you are connected to machines and all you see are doctors and hospital beds, that becomes your childhood story. The reality is that we can stop this. We can keep as far as we can childhood stories from hospitals so that they remain untouched and pure as they should be. Because every child deserves to live.
At the ‘Marie Curie’ Children’s Hospital – Department of Pediatrics Oncology, we want to support the projects that the ‘Touched Romania Foundation’ implements for children sick with cancer, by offering drugs, free treatments, clothes and toys and also by organizing special events within the department, which would bring smiles and hope on the faces of the children as well as their parents.
The goal of this project is to raise 20,000 Euros, amount necessary in buying and equipping the department of pediatrics oncology with a sterile room for intensive therapy, with filtrated air, a room that is highly necessary and which would lower the risks of new infections and complications for the children that are treated with high doses of cytostatics.
